On the 9th of December 1968, Doug Engelbart and his small team ushered in the Information Age with a groundbreaking demo, which came to be known as the Mother of All Demos. They were the first to provide a working, integrated vision of the computer as a tool for capturing and sharing knowledge at a vast scale, and they invented the key enabling technologies, including windows, hypermedia, graphical user interface, efficient navigation and command input, video conferencing, the computer mouse, word processing, dynamic file linking, revision control, and collaborative real-time editing, not to mention trail-blazing work on the first computer networks. Less known were his proven innovation strategies that drove their breakthrough work. Today, we all use many parts of Engelbart’s prescient vision from fifty years ago – while some of the more profound parts remain still unrealized.
Exactly fifty years later, on December 9, 2018, members of Engelbart’s original team and distinguished computer and internet pioneers, along with exceptional thought leaders, will convene for the The DEMO@50, THE ENGELBART SYMPOSIUM. You won’t want to miss this extraordinary event.
Engelbart’s work represents no less than a revolutionary step for mankind in its capacity to know, communicate, and solve problems collectively. He left us with a rich roadmap – and a challenge – for how humans can expand their intrinsic abilities in concert with the digital medium.
It is in this spirit we invite you to join in THE ENGELBART SYMPOSIUM. Be there to explore in-depth the key insights that drove Engelbart – and those that he wanted us all to know in order to unleash the next dramatic leaps in human potential.
Presenters Include: (subject to change): Vint Cerf, Tim Berners-Lee, Ted Nelson, Tim O’Reilly, Adam Cheyer, Christina Engelbart, Peter Norvig, Brewster Kahle, Tom Gruber, Howard Rheingold, Wendy Hall, Paul Saffo, Brant Cooper, Mark Pesce, Chris Messina, Gardner Campbell, Stephanie Couch, Andy van Dam, Jeff Rulifson and other members of Doug’s original team.
Symposium Highlights:
- We will start by exploring the steps to the Demo, as told by members of Engelbart’s original team, complete with behind-the-scenes accounts from those who were there. The morning concludes with leading technologists and philosophers debating how we can best apply the unrealized aspects of Engelbart’s system and philosophy to our shared online world.
- The afternoon kicks off with Engelbart’s business partner (and daughter), who will introduce his strategies for transforming your own organization as well as the future at scale.
- The afternoon continues with key technology and thought leaders who will explore and give examples of how we can apply Engelbart’s tools and key insights to our own world.
Reception to follow! Bonus: Demos inspired by Engelbart’s work
will be offered during lunch and reception in the adjacent area.
